Falling Skies Season 2, Episode 5 Love and Other Acts of Courage

      Falling Skies S2 Ep5

Love and Other Acts of Courage

      Recap:

The story opens with Red-eye and other Skidders screaming into the dawn, weird.  Oh shit, now Ben is screaming too, this can’t be good.  Hal and Margret share a moment of quiet.  It is nice to see them together, they have been slow-building this for many episodes now, it’s good to see it move forward.

The silence is broken by a series of explosions in the nearby town.  The Second Mass goes in to investigate and see if it is another resistance group.  Tom assigns Matt to guard the medical bus and Dr. Glass.  This was a smart idea from Tom.  Giving Matt a job where he feels useful, but also keeps him out of the fray.  Good job, writing staff.

When the Second Mass gets to the battlesite they realize that only Mech on Mech fighting could have caused this.  Hal finds Rick, the boy they unharnessed last season, underneath a Skidder.  It almost looked like he was being protected from the blast.  He has glowing back spikes, just like Ben.

Weaver comes in the med bus to interrogate Rick, Dr. Glass looks at his infected leg, it is much worse.  Ben is still missing, so Hal finally tells Tom about Ben’s glowing spikes.  Rick wakes up and leads a small force to Ben…and somebody else?  Rick and Ben are protecting…holy shit!  It’s Red-eye!  He’s talking through Rick.  Red-eye says he is fighting against the Overlords too.  The other Berserkers and Weaver want to kill him, but Tom convinces them to take Red-eye captive instead.

Hal, Margret, and a couple of Berserkers are on a scouting mission looking for hospital supplies.  Things do not look good for them.  Mechs come stomping by, and Hal and Margret share a long intimate moment in the back of a car.  I really like these guys together.

After they bring Red-eye back to camp, Tom and Ben argue about the Skitter rebellion.  Ben goes in to exposition mode, telling about the enslavement of the Skitters.  Tom remembers the torture at the hands of Red-eye, but Ben reminds him that Red-eye also spared his life.  Ben claims that Red-eye wants to work with the humans to resist the Overlords.

Tom begins his talk with Red-eye through Rick.  We find out that the Overlords are coming to kill him.   Hal and the gang find a clean, unstripped hospital, jackpot!  Margret gets real with Hal about her brain cancer.  She even lets Hal feel the holes in her skull, which should be creepy but is sweet instead.  Hal and Margret smooch, but Margret runs away from him.

Tom is unconvinced about Red-eye’s arguments, but he is listening too, coming around. Clearly this is where the storyline is heading.  Margret tells Hal they are “partners” and that she has is back and he has hers, but that is all.  Hal asks for more but is denied.  Hal, Margret, and the redshirts are under fire from the Overlord death squad.  Maggie is injured but Hal comes back to save her.  Weaver and the Berserkers come to kill Red-eye, while Tom, Ben, and Rick say no.  Weaver orders Tom to move, but he refuses the direct order.  Red-eye breaks out of the cage, proving that he could do it all along.  Rick takes a shotgun blast to save Red-eye.

Hal drives the med bus while Doc Glass works on Maggie.  Rick has a few last words for Ben, and then croaks.  Ben is torn between his loyalty to Red-eye and his father, frankly the fact that there might even be an argument makes me feel like there is something fishy going on with Red-eye too.  I don’t think he is quite as innocent as it might seem.

The Second Mass escapes to the hospital facility.  Maggie is resting in the hospital bed.  Hal says that he “needs” Maggie.  It looks like he is going to say “I love you,’ but Maggie cuts him off.  Instead, she asks him to sit by her bedside.  This is also very sweet and innocent.

After Doc Glass goes to work on Weaver with good medicine this time, Weaver chews Tom’s butt about disobeying an order and confides that he doesn’t trust Ben completely.  Tom admits that he doesn’t either.  Wow, that’s a thing to say.  Tom tells Weaver that he doesn’t know what he would do if he has to make a “hard choice” between the Second Mass and his son.  Tom and Weaver share a lighter moment where they discuss their early dislike for each other and their current respect.

They get the generator going at the hospital and all the lights come on.  In the jubilation Tom and Doc Glass slip away, presumably for some naked time.  Whoo hooo!  The story ends with Ben and Matt dangling their feet over the edge of the hospital roof.  Ben confides in Matt that he will be leaving soon.

      Review:

It wasn’t a huge surprise to find out that Red-eye is fighting against the other aliens.  Clearly he was significant in some way.  But I assume he was the one that put the worm in Tom’s eye, so clearly his motives aren’t entirely pure.

I like shows that show a monstrous looking creature that isn’t evil.  That kind of anti-xenophobic characterization is fun and needs to be in more pop culture.  I’m excited for a Skitter/Human team-up.

The Hal and Margret stuff was very sweet this episode.  Clearly they are headed together but they keep mentioning Karen, so I assume she will be back to complicate things soon.

RIP Rick, you won't be missed nearly as much as Jimmy.

Grade: A-  This episode had a great mix of action, surprises, new plotlines, and intimate personal moments.

      Second Watch:

Second Watch features writer and producer Remi Aubuchon, Connor Jessup who plays Ben, and Drew Roy who plays Hal.  Wil asks Connor about his new workout regimen.  Remi talks about Margret’s cancer scare.  Drew talks about Hal’s relationship with his brother.  Connor gives some interesting insight into Ben’s rage at the Skitters and his hope in the Skitter rebellion.  Wil is really on his game tonight; the questions are seamless and roll right into each other.  He is really hitting his stride.  Sara Carter pops up on the Skype and talks about Maggie’s relationship with Hal.  Ooooh, good question from the audience this time.  Maybe they aren’t all just ringers.  This was easily the best episode so far.  It was light and funny.  I’m very encouraged!
